Coolie Cap

The name Coolie Cap, which makes reference to the pill box-like hats worn by 19th century immigrants, is still sometimes used as the common name for this climbing vine. Named for Theodore Holmskiold, an 18th century Danish physician and professor, Holmskioldia Sanguinea is native to the Himalayan lowlands and is an erect scandent (climbing) vine that bears narrow, trumpet-shaped flowers (similar to the coolie cap)with crimson petals and orange-red calyces from summer to autumn. Prune after flowering. Great for indoors.
