(cyperus papyrus percamentus)

Now almost extinct in Egypt and now universally used as an ornamental plant. Common motif in art. The roots were used as fuel; the pith was eaten. The stem was used for sandals, boats, twine, boxes, mats, sails, cloth and most notably as a writing material. Popular easy to maintain interior plant. Grasslike leaves on tips of tall stalks give plant an umbrella appearance. Can be grown in just water without any soil. Ours is potted with bonsai soil using a bonsai container in order to keep the Papyrus dwarfed as they would grow many feet tall otherwise.
